The Odyssey encountered a star that sang, its harmonics resonating through the ship. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, listening to the celestial melody.

"Command, this is Vasquez. The star is emitting a pattern. It's almost like music."

"Copy, Odyssey. Can you trace the source?"

Kaelen appeared beside her. "It's a Star Singer. A rare phenomenon where a star's magnetic fields create harmonic vibrations."

"But it's beautiful," Elena said.

"Yes. The First Ones believed these stars were the universe's way of speaking to itself."

The Odyssey recorded the song, carrying it across the galaxy.

"Command, we've recorded the star's music."

"Copy, Odyssey. That's a remarkable discovery."

Elena looked at the star, at the light it cast across the void.

"The universe is alive," she said.

"Yes," Kaelen replied. "And it has a voice."

The Odyssey continued its journey, the star's song echoing in its memory banks.

The universe was vast.

And full of beauty.

The end.

The tunnel became a killing ground.

Mike fired from his ledge, dropping the first enemy, then a second. Below, the cavern erupted-shouting, gunfire, men scrambling for cover. The squad's ambush had bought them seconds. Now the real fight began.

"Contact! Multiple targets!" Reyes's voice crackled in his earpiece, but Reyes was supposed to be gone. Mike's heart stopped.

"I thought I told you to-"

"You told me to get the intel out. I sent Williams." Reyes's rifle cracked from somewhere to Mike's left. "I'm not leaving you."

Mike wanted to argue, but the tunnel below was filling with enemy soldiers. He fired again. Again.

"Fall back to the second position!" he shouted.

They moved through the darkness, firing, covering, falling back. The tunnel branched, split, gave them room to maneuver. They'd planned for this-fighting retreat, bleed the enemy, make every step cost.

Mike found a choke point, a narrow passage where only two men could advance at once. "Here! We hold here!"

His men fell into position-Reyes, Corporal Hayes, Privates Okonkwo and Martinez. Five rifles, a grenade launcher, and the darkness.

The enemy came.

Mike's rifle clicked empty. He reloaded, fired. Beside him, Okonkwo's grenade launcher thumped, the explosion echoing through the tunnels.

"More coming!" Martinez shouted.

Mike could hear them-boots, voices, the clatter of weapons. Dozens. Maybe more.

He pulled out his radio. "Command! This is Sergeant Chen! We're in the caves, grid seven-two-bravo! We need support now!"

Static. Then: "Sergeant, we have helos inbound. Ten minutes."

Ten minutes. They had three magazines left between them. The enemy was a minute away.

Mike looked at his men. Faces he knew. Men he'd trained, fought, bled with. Five soldiers against an army.

"Fix bayonets," he said quietly.

They did it without hesitation. Cold steel in the darkness. Old weapons for an old kind of fight.

The enemy appeared in the passage. Mike fired his last magazine, dropping the first wave. Then his rifle clicked empty.
